Alexandrine Parakeet Update – Confidence Building and Bonding Games

Rasta the alexandrine parakeet

To learn how to build your bird’s confidence check out our Total Parrot Transformation Series. This blog isn’t necessarily intended to teach you these techniques for free, but to show you that they work by tracking and sharing (and showing) my progress using them.

I’ve been working on building Rasta’s confidence with flight. Since he has come to be with me, he is allowed out of his cage 24/7. I’ve propped his cage door open with a chair so it never closes (because before he would accidentally close it ...

Alexandrine Parakeet Rasta Now Flying on Cue!

Rasta the Alexandrine parakeet flying on cue

I forgot that I’ve been working on flying and diet all at the same time and recently Rasta has finally got his flying down and on cue. I can now not only cue him to fly TO his cage (which he likes to do because he likes being at his cage anyway) but I can now also get him to fly away from his cage on cue. It is really fun, and I’ve even used some random rewarding to get him to fly ...

Alexandrine Parakeet Spins on Cue

It was quite the road to get here, but above shows Rasta spinning in a circle on cue! Hip hip, HOORAY!

Here are some videos showing the training in between to get to that final end goal with Rasta:

I have to say, my favorite part about this training was when I calmed down, decided to be patient and slower with my sessions and waited for Rasta to catch on. As I got to see him catch on, it was soooo cute… it was like a ...

Since cage training Rasta (teaching him to go back into his cage willingly via touch training which took about 6 training sessions total) I’ve been thinking… what’s next? I know Liam would love for Rasta to learn some tricks so that has been my new focus with him.

Usually, I would start with teaching ...

If you haven’t followed Rasta’s story, please do so here:

So what has happened with Rasta since the last time I wrote? A whole heck of a lot!

I’ve been doing two things:

  1. Encouraging Rasta to use flight as a means to get himself where he wants to go.
  2. Putting happy on cue by clicking and rewarding anytime ...
