BirdTricks Tuesdays: How to Properly Socialize Your Parrot to Other Parrots, Other Pets & People

STOP! In the name of love… just kidding. What a great screen capture for our video (laugh).

Here is our very FIRST BirdTricks Tuesday video for you! We are so excited. PLEASE, give us feedback on what you like, didn’t like, want more of, want less of and of course… keep sending in your questions to us via facebook and email (info@birdtricks.com).

Our goal with these Tuesday videos is not only to answer your questions but also to help you learn something, inspire you to try something new and positive with your parrot at home and to make you feel like you get to know us a little bit better every time, too. We love sharing our lives with you guys so any and all feedback as we try this new series is appreciated. It’s something that will continue to evolve as we go.

Jamieleigh Womach has been working with parrots and toucans since the age of 17. She isn’t homeless but is home less than she prefers to be. She travels the world with her husband, daughter, and a flockful of parrots with whom she shares the stage.

I feel better knowing that there are ways to over come social issues between birds as well as people and other pets. My wife and i have several birds that are real attention hounds but don’t like to be out together which can make it tough to quality time with everybody. We will now try your suggestions with getting them more comfortable with each other when out of cage. Of course we will try with only two at a time but this video gives us hope we may be able to give them more quality, quality time together. Thank you.

Loved the video and no not too long at all. With spring busting out all over can you talk about the dreaded hormonal male and how to read him. Seems like the only time my Umbrella Cockatoo bites me is in the spring. And again I can’t tell you how much I loved the video. Can’t wait for the next one!

Love watching your videos! I have a pretty well socialized IRN but the biggest take away for me was probably the part on animals that are both a bit scared or wary of each other and how important that power pause really is. I’m generally not a very patient person and haven’t been using power pause for a long time as she is so well behaved. But my partner is being gifted next AU season, a lutino IRN from my friends first ever clutch and my girl seems to be jealous of and hate any new animal that takes attention away from her. Takes her a month or so every time I am baby sitting other people pets to stop being mean to me and them and watching them like a hawk. After learning vicariously through your experiences, I know this is going to be my most powerful tool for our future situation and I can thank you guys enough for sharing your different experienced and wisdom with us. <3

It was really helpful to stop when the birds are relaxed and end on a positive note. There is always the temptation to try it one more time and then disaster can happen!

Wonderful informative video, mush appreciated. We have a cockatiel and a parakeet and have a new male baby turquoise Indian Ringneck Parakeet coming home to join our flock soon. I plan to use your training tips to hopefully help them all to get along. Keep your Tuesday videos coming as we love your presentations and your love of birds. Thank You.

As some one else already said it is all about timing and knowing your bird and their body language. But what I take away from this is you need to have patientce and really pay close attention to what your bird is telling you. They will let you know what is acceptable to them and not. And to always make sure that you are training from a positive situation and not negative. Love you guys you are the greatest.

It’s nice to hear that I’m not the only one that has a bird that doesn’t like their owner. I am so trying to get him to like me and your ideas are helpful. I have your one day miracles and I get so discouraged that it’s been 10 months that I’ve had my 15 year old macaw & he still won’t let me touch him. I wanted it to happen in a 1 day miracle. Haha. Thanks for your ideas and hope for the future with my beautiful bird.

Love Birdtricks Tuesdays – fab idea! And I wish your cruise ship was coming to the UK!!!! Key-take-away: don’t train for too long/quit whilst you’re ahead. I think I always push my luck and go on too long, which doesn’t always end on a positive. Looking forward to next Tuesday!

Enjoyed the video. My only suggestion would be to ditch the plaid shirt on “date night”, Dave, LOL! ????

Love your videos! Heard you say the video was getting too long, but don’t worry I can watch them for hours :) Especially the ‘behind the scenes’ footage is really cool to watch! As I live in The Netherlands it’s really difficult for me to come to one of your shows and meet you guys, but one day I definetely will! Good luck with your shows and can’t wait for next week :)

Perfect timing for this video in my household. New cockatoo arrives today and I will start working on intros! I especially like the reminder to work though scenarios and only reward the behaviors that we are working towards. Thanks :-)

Thanks for the Tuesday video, looking forward to next weeks video. Liked the click training with short duration tips, along with what to watch for with bird language. Hope you will feature a Tuesday video on screaming conures, how to get them to stop without using frustration actions toward the bird. I have caught myself wanting to just lash out which I don’t, but my Jenday conure just continues to scream. I’m still trying to ignore her until she stops, plus I use the clicker with good behavior. She ais sweetie and seems smart (until it comes to her continuous scream), picked up on several tricks very quickly. Thank you, you both are very entertaining!

How can I get my 2 cockatiels used to the clicker sound? They’re afraid of it.

You have taken on quite an undertaking. It will be informative and fun for me. I am jealous though. I can’t carry my cockatoo and laptop at the same time as the cockatoo wants to eat the computer. He has destroy my mouse. He likes to chew on anything wood preferable kitchen cabinets. I have quite a few of your videos and still can’t get him to stop on the no things and chew on the things I give him. I always try to come away with something learned from the videos. Some of them were hard to do that with so were a disappointment. I wish you well on your endeavor. Thank you for your time and especially your energy.

I really liked that the video was a bit long. It gave time to better explain. Overall a great video and very educational. I really enjoyed it :)

i am new to Birdtricks.com and I love it. I have been weaning my birds off of seed and giving fresh fruits and veggies. I have started touch training with my 3 conures. My question is what do I do if my bird won’t eat the fresh food? Do I give in and give seed? Also I watch the video’ from one day miracles to help guide me. Awesome material. I wish I had them back when I had my Amazon and cockatoo. Boy I sure didn’t know what I was doing. Thanks for being my coach and mentors

I am really excited you took the extra time to tell the elephant story! I sent in a question about how to socialize my bird with my dogs. I agree it’s important for safety to keep the distance but at the same time my bird is putting himself in danger by flying to attack the dog. I am going to try a this method to hopefully improve the safety of all of our lives together. Don’t worry precautions will be taken during the training to protect everyone! :) I’m just sad I have to wait until next Tuesday for another video!!!!

Thank you for this video! I have a request for another video. My Conure (Grande) has a HUGE squawking problem. We can’t hold him 24/7, but we still have him on our shoulders a lot, and if we don’t he’s often in the same room. But, as soon as one of us set him on his stand or cage, he starts squawking nonstop, as loud as possible! He is so demanding, it’s become very hard to take care of him. We are considering getting him a friend, but he has never met another bird before, so I want him to become used to other Conures. Also, what if the squawking get’s doubl-y horrible? Please, please help! I really don’t want to give up Grande!

Birdtrick Tuesdays are my new favorite thing! I love all the free information and tips to having a great bond with your bird. I hope one day that my lovebird (Lola) and I will be able to understand each other and have a great bond. As of right now…we don’t. However, we have been working on it. I was hoping you could do a video on how to get a bird to forage for their food. I first got my bird from another owner who kept her on a seed only diet. She is switched over to pellets but she won’t eat vegetables and it is so frustrating! Please help us, it would really mean a lot. And have fun on your cruise!

My takeaway is . Its hard to loose a “jinx” from an ocean liner, if you have the key.
